What is HRR? What does “HRR as a Service” mean?

HRR stands for “Healing, Regeneration, and Rejuvenation”. CytonSys coined this term because it is our company vision. For years we have been and will keep integrating science and technology to make effective anti-aging treatment accessible. “HRR as a Service” means we provide more than hardware and/or software. It involves advanced research, innovative technologies, and creative solutions combined as a service.

What is photo-bio-modulation (PBM)?

PBM is a process of promoting the energy performance of cells and neurons by irradiating photons onto treated locations.

Light is therapeutic. For decades people have enjoyed the benefits of using red or infrared light to relieve pain and increase metabolism. Different wavelengths of light interact with living cells with different effects. Recently, novel research using Near Infrared (NIR) light to enhance human cognitive abilities has provided encouraging evidence and gained wider attention for its potential to help with many neuro-cognitive problems such as declining memory, attention deficit, mood dysregulation, stress, brain injury, Parkinson’s, and so on.

The primary mechanism of PBM involves the absorption of photons which subsequently modulate the metabolic process and effectively improves the energy production, gene expression, and prevention of cell death. Inside any living cells, the energy comes from aerobic respiration that uses oxygen to break down nutrients in the mitochondria in a long multi-step process and to produce ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate, the energy currency of life). The “Electron Transport Chain” in the very last step of this cellular respiration process is essential for glucose metabolism. It involves a series of electron transporters embedded in the inner mitochondrial inter-membrane that shuttles electrons by pumping protons and reducing oxygen. The end products of this electron transport chain are water and ATP.

Interestingly, light at certain wavelengths is found to be able to up-regulate Cytochrome C Oxidase, a critical enzyme in the Electron Transport Chain that serves to convert high-energy photons into a source for ATP-based metabolic energy production. This in vivo mechanism is especially important for brain functions because neurons are critically dependent on oxidative energy metabolism.

PBM effects exists with natural sunlight but are limited due to the necessity for very long hours of exposure.  Using artificial light sources such as an LED or laser, makes it easy and efficient to kick in the PBM effect in a controlled way. Also known as Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT), it is a very safe and non-invasive therapy with no adverse effects based on current research and clinical trials on humans. The research on PBM is growing exponentially. There are approximately 400 scientific articles being published every year in over 70 countries around the world.

What is exosome therapy?

Exosomes are powerful small elements released by all cells, but those specifically derived from stem cells have anti-inflammatory benefits. They are like little messengers for cell-to-cell communication. They travel through the bloodstream carrying important signaling proteins and genetic information, telling cells what and how to react. This process is essential for overall cell heath but can be degraded due to disease or aging.

Exosome therapy involves injecting highly concentrated exosomes into the targeted area, letting the human body take care of the rest.

What is IMR (Immuno-Magnetic Reduction) test?

IMR is an ultra-sensitive assay technology that involves the use of antibody-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles to specifically label target biomarkers. It has been recently applied to quantify the tau protein in human plasma for early detection of neurodegenerative ailments, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD, Parkinson’s disease (PD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and vascular dementia (VD).

IMR techniques measures the percentage reduction in the alternating current’s magnetic susceptibility of the IMR reagent caused by the binding of the antibody-coated magnetic nanobeads with the targets. When the IMR reagent is mixed with the sample, the target analytes bind with the antibodies and the enlarged part of the magnetic beads, leading to a reduction in the oscillation speed and magnetic signal of the beads. The reduction percentage is referred to as the IMR signal. Sample analyte concentration is then calculated based on the established relationship between protein standard concentration and IMR signal.

Approximately 30% of individuals clinically diagnosed with AD or other types of dementia due to neurodegeneration do not display significant neuropathological changes during autopsy or by in-vivo imaging. However, using IMR to identify subjects in early-stage AD via assaying plasma amyloids and total tau proteins shows a diagnostic accuracy for prodromal AD higher than 80%.

What is the power requirement to effectively kick in the PBM effect?

According to the research on enhancing human cognitive functions, power density at 250 mW/cm^2 is the standard/golden recipe for effective results. For the effective stimulation dose to activate cells and neurons, the energy density of 1 J/cm2 is the peak value. However, because only approximately 2% of the applied light can pass through the bone, it requires at least 50 J/cm2 in order to reach the surface of the cortex. Low power with longer treatment cannot necessarily reach the threshold to increase cytochrome oxidase activity after the distance of propagation.

Compared to most PBM products on the market today, we are one of the very few vendors, if not the only one, that sticks to the dosage requirement according to recent research and clinical trials. We use robust engineering designs and components in order to achieve truly effective and powerful PBM treatments with long-lasting results.

What is the difference between wavelength 1064 nm and 810 nm?

According to the research on the optical window for biological tissue, near-infrared light at a wavelength range between 800 and 1100 nm in general has good penetration. In response to the concern of being absorbed by water, typically 810-830 nm is a good choice. However, scattering is the most dominant light-tissue interaction in which the propagating light becomes diffused rapidly when it travels further. In order to resolve this concern, 1064-1070 nm would be the best choice. Our cold-laser devices provide both the best wavelength of 1064 nm for deeper penetration and the second best wavelength at 810 nm. Our LED devices operate at 810 nm, which is the option that provides the most cost-effective solution for customers.

What is the difference between using a laser and an LED for treatment?

Compared to an LED, lasers are usually more highly focused with higher energy. In designing our CytonPro series laser products, we made the effort to collimate the light beam in order to deliver the energy more uniformly at the target area thus increase the treatment effectiveness.

Our laser products use either 1064 nm or 808 nm. Our LED products use 810 nm only. These wavelengths are the top choices for brain stimulation because they allow deeper penetration of photons into human brains, with 1064 nm as the best choice.

What are the advantages of the CytonSys devices?
  1. For laser devices:
  • Many devices on the market use low-power laser diodes. These lack the sufficient energy to kick off the true PBM effect. We use the best quality laser diodes that are available today.
  • The light beam of many other devices is not collimated to treat a location effectively. Our lasers are designed with advanced lenses and further processing to generate better controlled light beams for even distribution and efficiency.
  • The aperture of many other devices is very small, potentially increasing the risk of causing patients discomfort with high heat, even within a very short exposure time. Our light module design ensures the safety and comfort for patients, and an ease of operation for practitioners. You don’t need to keep moving the diode away every few seconds in order to avoid burning the patient. Our devices enable clinicians to conduct treatments easily and effectively with an accurate dosage.

     2. For LED devices:

  • A powerful and flexible NIR radiation intensity is critical to providing a high enough power to reach the threshold to kick-start the true (PBM) effect. Compared to other products, the power level of our devices are about 5 times stronger in order to meet the requirement according to research findings. While providing the strong power, you also have the option to lower the intensity to suit you treatment needs. The power level of our devices can be easily adjusted from 100% down to 1%.

  • Pulsing frequency flexibility: Our devices are the only PBM devices that allow setting the pulsing frequency to any number between DC (continuous) and 12K Hz.

  • User friendly: You can change the settings using an iOS app. If you save them as default, then next time you just need to press a physical button on the device to enable the treatment protocol automatically. The session time can also be changed to any proper length.

  • The CytonBrite provides the flexibility of 35 locations on the head for you to put 6 or more phototrodes (diodes) at specific locations to suit your treatment need.

Are your devices FDA cleared?

All LED devices are FDA-exempt to be used in the USA. Our laser devices are classified as class 3 and FDA-exempt to be used on adults (21+). CytonPro-5000 and CytonPro-5000M are FDA-cleared and can be used on children.
