Low-level light therapy (LLLT) based on photobiomodulation (PBM) has been used to treat depression and other mood disorders for many years.  In fact, the use of light to treat health conditions is not a new concept. For centuries, various cultures have used sunlight to help relieve pain and promote healing. More recently, the use of light therapy has become a mainstream treatment for a variety of conditions, including seasonal affective disorder and skin conditions such as psoriasis.

PBM is a safe and non-invasive treatment using low-level red and near-infrared light wavelengths to upregulate or downregulate mitochondrial activity. Normally, the penetration of visible light into the body is limited, meaning that direct application of photons to deep tissue would require surgery.   in contrast, the 800-1200 nm range of near-infrared light can penetrate much deeper into the body and can be used for PBM without the need for invasive procedures.

Recent studies even suggest that light therapy may also be beneficial in treating certain brain conditions, such as neurocognitive decline and Autism. Researchers are now exploring how light therapy can be used to improve cognitive function and memory in people with these conditions.

Light therapy is a promising new treatment modality with wide-ranging applications.
